Workers’ comp insurance certainly covers a lot of the expenses that are incurred when employees get injured or are made ill on the job, but it does not cover everything, of course, and there are a number of factors that can render an illness or injury outside the scope of workers’ comp coverage even if it is work-related.

Some examples of situations and conditions that do not fall under the workers’ compensation umbrella include injuries resulting from accidents that occur when an employee is en route to or from their place of work; any sickness induced from food that is consumed during a work break; injuries that are self-inflicted, inflicted on purpose, or that occur while the employee is intoxicated; and injuries suffered during an action that’s deemed to be recreational in nature, even on the job site.
